Through May 5 - Double Take at 70 South Park.  Lenore Pereira and Rich Niles are Bay Area collectors par excellence, having amassed a staggering amount of work by contemporary female artists and then having custom built a gorgeous multi-story home in South Park to display it.  For this group show the couple invited a group of Mills Museum Studies students to mine the collection to put an exhibition together, and the result is a very strong showing of work by the likes of Jennie Ottinger, Wangechi Mutu, Gay Outlaw, Doris Salcedo, Tauba Auerbach, and many many more of my favorites both local and international.  The gallery, situated on the ground floor beneath the Niles/Pereira home, is only open on weekends, but it's well worth a Saturday or Sunday stroll down to South Park.

This week I've been thinking a lot about the work of Andrea Zittel and her experiments with small-space living and her marvelous designs in general.  A quote from when she won the Kiesler Prize for Architecture and the Arts last year:

Based in Los Angeles and Joshua Tree, California, Zittel takes an expansive approach to art and space making, creating social sculptures that traverse boundaries between art, architecture, design and technology. […] The jury selected her primarily for her experimental and innovative work that has extended the dialogue of contemporary art and ideas. In the spirit of Frederick Kiesler, her work is both intellectual and yet deals with real life situations and occurrences. Zittel's sculptures and spatial installations transform everything necessary for life - such as eating, sleeping, bathing, and socializing - into artful experiments and scenarios for new ways of living.

Yeah, she rules.

Through May 25 - Abstract Mash-Up II at Crown Point Press.  This inspiring group show pulls from Crown Point Press's vast archives to create suites of virtual movement across the gallery walls.  Artists are mixed and matched and sometimes clustered together, with themes of color and gesture emerging out of witty juxtapositions.  Each piece stands on its own of course, but it's fun to see what the artworks have to say when they talk to each other too.

Oh to have been in NYC last summer and to have seen the group summer show Paper Band at Jason McCoy Gallery featuring (you guessed it) 100 works on paper from the likes of Agnes Martin, Jon Rappleye, Amy Sillman, Marcel Dzama, and many many more.  From the press release:

Paper Band incorporates a large number of artworks that span several generations and at times differ greatly.  Nevertheless, the overall installation translates as a visual thread of thought that seeks independence from a more literal or traditional concept of grouping likeminded artists, movements and aesthetics.  Rather than aiming to illustrate a thesis, Paper Band pays homage to a medium that has proven an infinite source of inspiration; it also celebrates the unexpected connections that can be found between works that at first glimpse seem to have little in common.
