There is always something interesting going on in Baer Ridgway's Project Space, and right now the small room is literally papered from floor to ceiling with extracts from artist/writer/curator Darin Klein's vast zine collection. Klein has long been devoted to indie media, and the exhibition coincides with the release of issues #2 and #3 of his zine 21st Century Queer Artists Identify Themselves. Those issues are available for flipping through in the gallery along with other zines he has published, but also do not miss the series of Klein's wonderful handmade books. If all that isn't enough there is also an associated chapbook written by Christopher Russel: A Transcription of the Audio Tour, Darin Klein Childhood Home and Museum, Clovis, California. Curated by Margaret Tedesco of [2nd floor projects], the show is a wonderful testament to the publishing urge as a means of self-expression especially for communities long ignored by mainstream media whether they be queer, punk, weird, whatever. And the sheer volume and variety of the work on display was a strong reminder of why I love zines so much in the first place.
