The Stones Throw tour rolled into town last night and settled in at the Great American with a excellent cross-section of musicians and DJs from the LA label, all capped off by an incredible VJ set by Peanut Butter Wolf. Live-mixing music videos that were projected on a huge screen behind where he was set up onstage, Wolf took us through every conceivable genre of danceable music, from Frank Zappa and L'Trimm straight up to Hot Chip and Daft Punk and MF DOOM. Music video freak that I am I was literally mesmerized by the visuals, clapping my hands with glee every time I recognized another track. In one particularly brilliant sequence Wolf went from Beastie Boys to Smashing Pumpkins and then right into Digital Underground and De La Soul. I danced like I was in junior high again, and so energetically that I gave myself a foot cramp. I also love that in a Bay Area audience, no matter how obscure the track the DJ is playing, there will always be a whole bunch of people singing along.
