The urge to run off to Edinburgh right this moment is very strong, what with the Tracey Emin show and Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller at the Fruitmarket Gallery and now I just read about this huge Impressionism and Scotland exhibit that's been at the National Gallery of Scotland all summer. Featuring gorgeous canvases by everyone from Degas and Van Gogh (pictured right) to Whistler and the Glasgow Boys, the show explores the connections between French impressionism and Scottish colourism. Even just flipping through the online images it's really striking to me how much the Scottish artists were influenced by the colors and shapes of the likes of Matisse and Cezanne. Crowd-pleasing stuff for sure, but that Whistler painting of the girl in grey and green gets me every time.
