At Varnish Fine Art - Bay Area Bronze. I love bronze as a medium, with its associations going back into the classical era. I walk past Varnish every day on the way to my bus home, and I've been peering in at the work on display in this latest show. I tried to go get a proper look on my lunch yesterday, but the gallery's metal shutter was down when I got there. "They're still closed," said the man who runs the parking lot next door, helpfully. I tried again after work, and ran smack into a red velvet rope. "Closed For Private Event." Maybe I'll make another attempt today.
After dinner last night I made my way to the Hayes Valley Market Gallery for the Anar-t Show of Emerging Persian-American Artists. A DJ spinning some thumping drum 'n' bass and spectacular wall paintings by Reyes set the stage for the 5 artists whose work was on display. I was particularly drawn to the more abstract pieces: Mahshid Modares's paintings in which the shapes and colors were reminiscent of lush carpets, and Amir Esfahani's amazing tile-like patterns hypnotically layered over and under other forms.
