From the Booksmith:
"Irvine Welsh’s new novel, The Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs, is a trangressive parable about the great obsessions of our time: food, sex, and celebrity. Set partly in San Francisco, it is the story of two men locked in a war of wills which threatens their very existence. This new novel is vintage Irvine Welsh!"
New Irvine Welsh? It's already on my wish list.
From Green Apple Books:
"There is a lot of cleverness in contemporary American fiction, but too frequently it comes at the cost of real emotional attachment. It's because Aimee Bender does not sacrifice true depth of character to laughs or surprises that she's been a favorite of ours for so long. Darkness and hints of desperation always lurk within Bender’s whimsy, but the possibility of redemption is never entirely out of reach."
I don't actually remember uncovering a whole lot of redemption in the stories in this collection, but darkness and desperation you will certainly find in spades. And some people find that pleasurable. Bender is a brilliant writer, but I prefer a little bit of light with my clever.
Reminder:
Salon this Friday at my place!
There will be much snackitude. PS If you want to get on the email list just let me know.
This is not CNN:
Neil Young's new video "Families" is a clever indictment of the media and President Bush and stirring tribute to those affected by the Iraq War.
