The Manchester Art Gallery recently acquired a 2002 piece called Filter by sculptor Antony Gormley, best known for his human figures based on the shape of his own body. The sculpture is meant to hang in mid-air, but it is composed of heavy welded metal discs and requires steel cable to prevent it from coming crashing down. The Guardian has some fantastic photos of Filter being very, very carefully lifted into place in the Manchester Art Gallery here. I like art that necessitates hard hats during its installation.
