Recently closed - Flection at Hedge. This small but perfectly curated show was a breath of fresh air for me on a work afternoon last week, featuring art by Michael Delucia, Liam Everett, Anna Sew Hoy, Ruth Laskey, Arik Levy, Sam Orlando Miller, Clare Rojas, Hugh Scott-Douglas and Sara Vanderbeek. Curator Sabrina Buell chose work that speaks to the inherent qualities of fabric, its folds and textures and shadows, though sometimes the individual pieces were rendered in very unfabriclike materials such as polished metal or carved wood. Anna Sew Hoy's ceramic tissue dispensers are simultaneously utilitarian and whimsical, while Liam Everett allows weather and pigment to enact natural wonders on the cloth he uses in his practice. The theme of the show also led me to think of quilting and other folk traditions when I looked at Clare Rojas's work with its deconstructed geometry. Hedge is a new space to me but between this show and its proximity to Cotogna you know I'll be back.
