Through September 28 - Beyond Landscape at the Marin Community Foundation. Ecologically-themed art gets a distinctly female perspective in this extensive group show organized by the Women Environmental Artists Directory (WEAD) and inspired at least in part by Mierle Laderman Ukeles and her 1969 Manifesto for Maintenance Art. The exhibition is a little haphazard both in quality and in how it has been installed amidst the cubes and conference rooms of the Foundation, but when Bonnie Sherk is one of the jurors you can count on finding many gems like Michele Brody's abstract of dried flax roots in handmade linen paper or Pamela Blotner's felted wool taxidermies. I also appreciated the inclusion of ground-breaking work like Jo Hanson's SF Street Sweeping performances and Sherk's ongoing "A Living Library" initiative to include gardens and other green space in urban planning. Those women are my heroes.
