The new show at David Cunningham Projects I Am Kurious Orange begins with the Fall, namely a modern ballet called "I am Curious, Orange" that the band collaborated on with dancer Michael Clark back in 1988. Curator Anne Colvin has invited Marc Arthur, Alex Hetherington, Karla Milosevich, and some very special guests (like Cliff Hengst and Scott Hewicker) to use that dance piece as a reference point for creating art, performances, and music that will occur at the gallery throughout May. Arthur was due to perform at the opening last night according to the schedule I found chalked up right inside the front door when I arrived, but as things had not quite gotten under way yet a guitar and drum set sat waiting to be played in the main room, bathed in orange light. In the next gallery an installation makes the connection to the 1988 ballet more explicit, with items on display such as the poster for when the piece was performed at Sadler's Wells in London and then also an LP of the soundtrack the Fall created for it, I am Kurious Oranj. Mark E. Smith used William Blake's poem "Jerusalem" as inspiration for the lyrics, and the songs themselves play continuously in that small room, throbbing with delicious intensity and providing some auditory context for the other ephemera. Colvin has also included her dance-inspired collages in the show, as well as a video called Cracked Actor that features blurry close-ups of a face that may or may not be David Bowie. The gallery should be posting a schedule of all of the associated performances on their site soon, and I myself am aiming to catch a rehearsal of Milosevich's Fall cover band if at all possible.
